Why study Mathematics?
- Mathematics is now used in engineering, economics, operations research, biology, the environment, finance, insurance, software design, social planning, medical trials and archaeology, to name but a few. Therefore, studying mathematics at Advanced level has an advantage, whatever field a student has chosen to follow in the University.
- In particular, the study of mathematics at A-levels is a prerequisite to follow certain courses in the University, such as Engineering, Astronomy, Physics, Aeronautics etc.
- In some universities in U. K. mathematics is classed as a 'priority subject', which means that those degrees which include mathematics are eligible for University bursaries.
- A degree in mathematics is valued by employers from many career sectors. As a result, some Universities have developed new degree courses to produce graduates with appropriate mathematical and financial skills to enter a career in the expanding financial sector.
- Students also opt for as an essential subject for the course they intend to follow at University, but also because of its intrinsic beauty which will enable them to pursue a career as a professional mathematician.
