Infant School
The Infant Section (200 pupils ages 2 ½ years - 7 years).
The Infant School of Colombo International School, Kandy, provides a stimulating environment for a child�s total development. We provide a balanced curriculum to cater to the inquisitive mind of the infant.
A practical-based teaching/learning process helps the teacher and the child to bond in a friendly atmosphere. Presently we have parallel classes from the Play Group to Year 2. With spacious classrooms that are able to accommodate up to 24 children, the teacher student ratio stands at 1 to 10. Special classes are conducted for students with less developed skills in language and mathematics.
The children are grouped under the following age groups

Curriculum
Language teaching is based on the Nelson Skills and Development Books. The Ginn Reading Scheme starts at the Reception Class and we follow the Heinemann Maths scheme, together with a range of other supplementary resources.
The School has links with leading independent schools in the UK to upgrade the curriculum.
All classes from the Play Group upwards work around a Topic theme. The Topic is integrated into the other subjects taught in class. Science is introduced in the Year 2 class. Apart from English Language, the children start learning Sinhala, Tamil and French in the Year 2 Classes.
The children are exposed to a variety of reading material in a fully equipped Infant Library. Computing starts in the Reception Class and the child is capable of handling the computer independently within a short time. A range of play equipment displayed both in the classroom and outside, provides the younger group with the opportunity for physical and mental development.
The natural setting of the play areas under the Bo Tree and the area overlooking the Mahaweli River provides an ideal environment for free play for the young child. The experienced staff follows a term-based and weekly plan of work, which is continually reviewed and updated using a variety of resources.
Extra Curricular Activities
Physical education, art, music, percussion band and swimming lessons are included in the class timetable. The infant school children take part at the school inter-house sports and swimming meets. The children who excel at sports get the opportunity to participate at inter-international schools sports and swimming meets.
After school the children have the option of joining in the various club activities. The Play Group children have music and movement, book club and the infant choir. The older groups get together for nature club, indoor games, mini tennis, and computer club.
The special activities that take place annually are an art exhibition and a musical production or a concert. Student participation at such occasions is looked forward to by the children as well as parents.
Resources and facilities available in the classrooms, library and computer room of the school are all child centered and designed to help the children develop their potential to the fullest in order to achieve the standard required to progress through infant school up to university.
