Primary School

The Junior Section (200 students aged 7- 11 years)

The curriculum at the Colombo International School, Kandy, is based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales with due regard being paid to the cultural context of Sri Lanka.

The School places strong emphasis on the all-round education of students by offering access to a range of extra-curricular activities, excursions during the term and performing arts.

At the Colombo International School, Kandy, it is realised that each student is an individual with specific educational needs. The School takes pride in bringing out the best in every student. Small classes make this task possible, with classes up to a maximum of 26 students.

The junior section of the Colombo International School, Kandy, provides students in classes from Years 3-6 with a solid foundation of learning. There is also increased specialist teaching in languages, art and science.

Reflecting on the educational philosophy of the school, the aims of the junior section are:

• To develop the skills necessary to work independently, confidently and sensibly.
• To develop a positive self-image.
• To develop lively, inquiring minds and be able to solve problems in an imaginative or logical way.
• To be able to respect and tolerate other races and religions.
• To encourage a sense of personal responsibility for the environment.
• To be helpful and sympathetic towards the less fortunate.

The Academic Subjects

English and Mathematics are taught by the class teachers, using the Nelson Scheme and Heinemann Scheme respectively. These subjects are actively taught and the teachers have the aid of a wide range of resources from the junior school library or the mathematics department. Topic is the third subject taught by the class teachers and is humanities- based.

The list given below describes the topics in each of the three terms.

Year 3 - Dinosaurs
  - Food and Farming
  - A Local Study

Year 4 - Sri Lanka
  - Space & Beyond
  - Pollution

Year 5 - Ancient Egypt
  - Natural Phenomena
  - Famous People

Year 6 - Ancient Greece
  - Rainforests
  - The Human Body

Science, Music, Art, Computing, French, Sinhala/Tamil, Drama and P.S.E. (Personal and Social Education) are all taught by specialist teachers in purpose built classrooms. The P.E. department, conducting both P.E. and swimming classes is well trained and experienced. They have access to a wide range of equipment to enhance learning of many different sports.

Special Needs

To ensure that students have the best possible opportunity to reach their full potential, the junior section has supportive English classes for each year group. These allow children, with less-developed skills in English, to work in smaller groups and grasp all the foundations of the language before starting senior school. Extension activities are taught regularly, in mathematics, to those students who demonstrate a special talent.

Sporting Excellence

Sport in the junior section of the Colombo International School Kandy is encouraged both within the curriculum and through extra-curricular activities and teams.

The CISK junior athletics basketball, cricket, football, netball and swimming teams have competed against several schools and someagainst other international schools around the island.

The annual inter-house swimming and athletic meets are significant events in the school calendar. Keen participants compete to win medals and trophies and to improve upon personal best performances and school records. The junior section places substantial emphasis on team values and participation by all.

Non-Sporting Activities

All aspects of the arts are flourishing at CISK. Junior students are encouraged in art using a variety of media as well as the computer. Drama plays a major role in the school, with a full scale musical production being held annually. Public speaking, which builds self-confidence and character, is a major aspect of school life. Assemblies, stage productions as well as the annual Literacy Day highlight this important skill.
